Diabetes is a disease which occurs when your blood glucose/sugar levels are higher than the recommended limits. Usually blood glucose/sugar comes from the food we eat. Insulin plays a pivotal role in uptake of blood glucose/sugar into the cells and aids in the breaking down of the glucose/sugar molecules as energy to carry out the basic activities of the cells, organs and the human body as a whole. When this insulin production in reduced or if there is resistance to the action of insulin in the cell, the glucose/sugar in your blood starts rising leading to Diabetes. High blood sugar will cause many short term and long term effects on your body affecting your eye, kidney, heart, nerve and brain.
However with timely diagnosis and expert management, most of the short and long term damage caused by high blood sugar/glucose can be prevented or controlled leading on to healthy, active, productive and fulfilling life.
Disease Treated
All the types of Diabetes are treated in our Centre Of Excellence:
Type 1 Diabetes, a disease of childhood, is an auto immune condition where in the body’s own immune system is activated against the insulin secreting cells of pancreas.
Type 2 Diabetes, which occurs in later part of your life, but can occur at adolescent and adult, is a chronic progressive disease. Though the body produces adequate insulin initially , there is a high resistance for its action. However with time the insulin secreting cells are exhausted and insulin deficiency occurs overtime.
Pre-diabetes describes is a condition where the blood sugar levels are higher than normal but not high enough to be diagnosed as diabetes.
Impaired glucose tolerance (IGT)
Impaired fasting glucose (IFG)
Gestational Diabetes Mellitus (GDM) is a type of diabetes that occurs during pregnancy. Small percentage of women who has GDM develops Diabetes later.
Pancreatic Diabetes (Type 3C Diabetes) This is a special category of diabetes where high blood sugar is noted secondary to damage of the pancreas like alcohol intake, infectious disease or drugs.
