The Colorectal Surgery division is dedicated to providing comprehensive surgical care to patients suffering from both benign and malignant diseases affecting the Colon, Rectum, and Anal canal. With the advent of advanced imaging and cutting-edge technologies such as the da Vinci Robotic surgery platform, 4K laparoscopic suite, and 3D imaging in laparoscopy, patients can now experience better outcomes and quicker recovery times.
The use of these technologies has enabled the team to achieve remarkable success in preserving the sphincter and avoiding the need for colostomy/ileostomy in hundreds of patients who would have otherwise required it. Overall, the Colorectal Surgery division is committed to providing patients with the best possible surgical care while ensuring their comfort and ease throughout the treatment process.

Every Tuesday and Friday, the colorectal squad operates an outpatient clinic where patients can either make an appointment or walk in. A comprehensive evaluation and testing are provided to patients based on their symptoms. For patients diagnosed with cancer, their case is discussed during the Tumor Board meeting held at 4:00 pm.

A dynamic group of medical professionals, consisting of Consultant Colorectal surgeons, Oncologist Dr. Akila, Radiologist Dr. Srikanth, Pathologist Dr. Aravind, and knowledgeable Specialist nurses, convene daily at 4.00 pm in the auditorium to hold a Tumour Board meeting. This meeting aims to thoroughly discuss the patient’s current condition, including histopathology and imaging, to devise the best possible management plan tailored to their specific needs. These plans adhere to the NCCN American guidelines, ensuring the most effective and appropriate treatment for each patient.

Self-illuminating Proctoscope is used for the detailed assessment of anal canal problems such as anal fistula, hemorrhoids, and anal fissures. For patients with first and second-degree hemorrhoids with bleeding, rubber band ligation of hemorrhoids is performed. Banding of hemorrhoids is a well-tolerated procedure and the patient can return home within a few hours. Rigid sigmoidoscopy is performed in the outpatient clinic for selected patients and it offers the option of performing a biopsy as well if necessary.

Patients suffering from fecal evacuation problems and incontinence are evaluated with Anal manometry. Based on the manometry findings patients are carefully selected who may benefit from Biofeedback therapy. Trans-anal Ultrasonography is a particularly useful investigation for patients with anal fistula, anal pain, and fecal incontinence.

Proctoscopy and Rigid Sigmoidoscopy are performed in the outpatient clinic as above. Flexible Sigmoidoscopy is offered to patients with anorectal symptoms. An enema is given to the patient following which a sigmoidoscopy is performed. For patients with chronically altered bowels and anemia Colonoscopy is offered. We can perform a colonoscopy on the same day for patients presenting to outpatients. We have a vastly experienced Radiology team helping us with Ultrasonography and CT scans.

Patients with colonic and rectal polyps are offered colonoscopy and polypectomy as a day-case procedure. For selected patients presenting with obstructed colonic cancer, same-day stenting service is provided.

A dedicated chemotherapy ward with well-trained staff nurses looks after the patients undergoing chemotherapy. Pre-printed protocols are used with individualized treatment offered to patients. All chemotherapy administration is closely monitored by Consultant Oncologists and Consultant Surgeons.
