Internationally renowned Prof.C.Palanivelu , a pioneer in the field of laparoscopy and robotic surgery started the department way back in 2002, proudly so as to say that GEM hospital was oneof the earliest hospitals in the country to start an exclusive bariatric surgery centre.
Dr. P. Praveen Raj is responsible for placing GEM Obesity and Diabetes centre as a centre of excellence globally. He and his team are credited with performing over 3000 bariatric surgical procedures.

Bariatric surgery(obesity treatment) is mainly for people who have a body mass index (BMI) of more than 30. This body mass index is the main criterion on which the eligibility of bariatric surgery is considered such as,
1. Patient has a BMI of 30-35 with serious health issues related to obesity,
2. Patient has a BMI of 35-40 along with serious health issues related to obesity (such as heart disease) and last
3. Patient has a BMI of 40 or more
